Smart boilers with weather compensation

Weather compensation controls may not be something you’ve heard of, but they are by far the most efficient way to control your boiler. When it comes to saving money in the home one of these can definitely help!

How do weather compensation controls work?

Actually the whole process is very simple:

  • The boiler is connected to a small sensor on the outside of the building.
  • When there is a temperature change outside, the device communicates with the boiler.
  • The boiler responds by increasing or decreasing radiator temperature to compensate.

This pro-active mechanism means that the people inside the building won’t even know the temperature outside has changed.

What are the benefits?

These constant small changes mean that the boiler is able to operate at the minimum temperature required to keep the rooms warm, less output equals less wasted heat and cost.

With a return temperature being kept as low as possible, around 57°C or less, means the boiler can condense as it is designed to. The boiler therefore runs efficiently, again saving you money.

You will feel more comfortable in your home, as the accuracy of the controller allows all the rooms (served by radiators or under floor heating) to maintain an even temperature, reducing the possibility of cold spots and hot zones around the building.

The weather compensation controller also allows us to accurately set up your boiler by matching the output of the boiler to the size/heat load of your home. The more accurate we can be – the better the boiler and your heating system works for you.

How much could I save?

We installed a Viessmann Vitotronic H01B controller connected to a Vitodens 200-W boiler for a customer in 2012 who saved a massive 50% on their heating bills over a 12 month period. They were so proud of the savings they even showed us the data they had recorded – even we were impressed. A typical saving that most of our customers have experienced is between 15-30% which is still exceptionally good.
